Yuna
Yuna is straight up dreamy. Donning elegant hijabs and singing so flawlessly, she’s a huge pop star in her home country Malaysia and is starting to make waves in the U.S. as well. Her self-titled album is full of beautiful and inspiring pop songs with mellow beats, beginning with “Lullabies,” a haunting track that starts with only a drum machine beat, a piano, and a perfect introduction to Yuna’s vocal range but culminates in an exhilarating electronic symphony. Other songs on the album, like “Planes” feature the simple acoustic guitar singer-songwriter formula, but are no less mesmerizing with sunny choruses that are nearly impossible to not sing along to. “Wipe the sleep from my eyes, Wake up in another life, I don’t like planes but I love to fly, love to fly” — I dare you to listen to this song and not immediately start an underwear & hairbrush dance party. Pharrell produced a few of the songs on the album, including the standout “Live Your Life,” an amazing song with a 70s R&B influence that will get your booty groovin’. The whole album is sweet and funky, simple and complex, and just gorgeous in ways I haven’t heard from a pop singer in a long time. I’m sure her star will continue to rise as more people become completely entranced with her (like I have).
